A majority of Americans disapprove of the way President Donald Trump is handling the situation with Iran and say they feel less safe, with 73 percent expressing concerns about the United States entering a new war, according to a new poll.

The poll, conducted by Ipsos in partnership with ABC News, asked respondents what they thought about two unfolding challenges for the Trump presidency -- rising tensions with Iran and the upcoming impeachment trial in the Senate.

The results, released Sunday, show a majority of all American adults, 56 percent, disapprove of Trump’s handling of the situation with Iran following a US drone strike that assassinated top Iranian commander Lieutenant General Qassem Soleimani in Iraq last Friday.

Early on Wednesday, Iran responded by striking a major American airbase in western Iraq and another in Erbil, the capital of Iraq’s semi-autonomous Kurdistan region.

Americans’ attitude on the subject was split along party lines, according to the poll. 

While 87 percent of Republicans said they approved of Trump’s handling of the situation, an overwhelming 90 percent of Democrats disapproved.

The poll also found that 54 percent of Republicans felt safer, compared to 82 percent of Democrats who said they felt less safe. Only 28 percent of Independents said they felt safer.

When asked about concerns over a potential full-scale war with Iran, a majority of both Democrats and Republicans said they were concerned.

A total of 94 percent of Democrats and 52 percent of Republicans said they were either very concerned or somewhat concerned about the possibility of the US getting involved in another war in the Middle East. Only 6 percent of Democrats said they were not so concerned or not concerned at all.

Independents were more reflective of the country’s attitude as a whole, with 72 percent expressing concerns about a new war. This is while 73 percent of all Americans said they were concerned.

Attitudes on the domestic conflict, impeachment, were also driven by partisanship, with 66 percent of Democrats and 10 percent of Republicans maintaining that Democratic leaders were abiding by a constitutional duty to ensure a full trial in the Senate.

The US president openly discussed how the assassination of the Iranian general would shore up support from GOP Senate hawks ahead of his impeachment trial.

This is while 81 percent of Republicans and only 8 percent of Democrats believed that allegations against Trump are not serious and that the Democrats are playing partisan politics.
